ABOUT THE SOCIETY

Academic Events

The Larmor Society hosts a variety of talks each term spanning all areas of scientific research, which all students and other members of the university are welcome to attend free of charge. Every talk has refreshments (including wine) provided free of charge. We recently hosted a talk, followed by Q&A, with the esteemed alumnus Sir Roger Penrose.

Socials

We host social events during term (infamously known as Natsci Drinks) such that different year groups can get to know each other and relax. Apart from the good company, socials include tons of pizzas and nice drinks.
Natsci drinks has been the instigator of many friendships and innumerable memories, and may be credited for the close familiarity of Johnian natscis.
Pictured below is a typical event, this one in H16, with an honourary member of the society in the foreground.

Annual Dinner

The Annual Dinner, in Lent Term, is hosted in the Combination Room where the D-Day invasion was planned. There is no finer place in Cambridge to have a five-course meal paired with high-quality wine. The dinner is a highly formal event and only begins to devolve towards the very end. The bar and prize ceremony afterwards is considerably less formal.

Garden Party

At the end of every academic year, the Larmor Society hosts an Annual Garden Party with the Adams Society (Mathematics) and Parsons Society (Engineering), featuring a full hog roast (as well as bountiful non-meat options). There is no better way to celebrate the end of exams.

Election

Each year, in the middle of Lent term, we hold the society election. This is the end of many friendships, and the beginning of countless political careers. Below is a varied selection of pamphlets and manifesto posters from the previous years. Some successful, some deservedly unsuccessful.
